How to set the page title and meta fields of WordPress posts

OK so I honestly don’t know if this is a feature of my theme or if this is a standard feature of WordPress itself but when I’m editing a post I can click Screen Options at the top right of the page and I get a list of options, including one called SEO.

If I check this then the following appears somewhere on the page.

Each field does what it says.

  • Setting Page Title changes the HTML head title to whatever you enter. I set the title of this page to “WordPress page title and meta fields”.
  • Setting Meta Description sets the HTML head description meta field. For this page I set this to “How to set the page title and meta fields of WordPress posts”.
  • Setting Meta Keywords sets the HTML head keywords meta field. For this page I set this to “wordpress,post,seo,meta,title,description,keywords”.

This results in HTML like this:
